Westeros isn’t finished with us yet. While Game of Thrones prequels like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are already lighting up HBO’s future slate, author George R.R. Martin has confirmed that several more spinoffs—including actual sequels—are now in the works. This exciting news, which Martin revealed at the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, has been detailed by the trusted fan site Los Siete Reinos.

Prequels, Projects, and Surprising Sequel Revelations
At the event, Martin shared that in addition to ongoing prequels, “there’s also a sequel or two in development,” adding that there are currently “maybe 5 or 6” new shows being worked on in partnership with other writers. The author noted these shows are not all prequels, making it clear that, for the first time, sequels advancing the timeline past Game of Thrones’ divisive finale are on the table.
While he didn’t reveal which characters could lead these projects—or whether they would be TV series or feature films—this officially puts the world “after Thrones” back on the map.

It’s worth noting that although HBO’s previously announced Jon Snow sequel was shelved in 2024, the door is still open for that story—or others like Arya’s voyages west or Sansa’s reign in the North—to return in some form. The presence of unconfirmed projects, including potential movies and entirely new characters, ensures that no corner of George R.R. Martin’s universe is off limits.
The Expanding Thrones Franchise
Here’s what’s currently known, as shared via Los Siete Reinos:
-
Confirmed and in development: Aegon’s Conquest (prequel), plus unconfirmed projects like The Sea Snake, 10,000 Ships, The Golden Empire—and now, sequels.
-
Martin stressed these are mostly in early planning; not all may make it to air, but the size and ambition of HBO’s slate are bigger than ever.
With House of the Dragon renewed through 2028 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms eyeing a three-season arc, Martin’s remarks show that both prequels and unseen chapters of this world have a future. Fan wishes for Arya, Bran, or a new generation of Starks and Lannisters could soon move from speculation to screen.
