Matt Smith has given fans an honest and hilarious insight into why he loves playing Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon. When asked about his favourite part of portraying the Rogue Prince, Smith didn’t hold back:
“He’s good with a sword, he’s got a quick tongue, and he doesn’t give a flying you-know-what.”
This made the hosts laugh out loud, to which one of them added, “a rat’s…”
He added upon it, “yes, doesn’t give a rat’s..(a**)”

This blunt description perfectly sums up Daemon’s chaotic, fearless, and unapologetic personality; the very traits that have made him one of the most beloved (and controversial) characters in the Game of Thrones universe.
Why Smith loves Daemon
For Smith, Daemon represents complete freedom. He is a skilled warrior with sharp wit who refuses to bow to rules, expectations, or authority. Whether he’s defying his brother, the Small Council, or societal norms, Daemon lives entirely on his own terms. That rebellious energy clearly fuels Smith’s performance and keeps the role exciting for him season after season.
Smith’s playful answer also highlights the fun he has while playing the character. The combination of intense action scenes, cutting dialogue, and zero concern for consequences makes Daemon a dream role for any actor.
What this means for Season 3
As House of the Dragon Season 3 dives deeper into the Dance of the Dragons, Daemon’s “doesn’t give a flying f**k” attitude is expected to play a major role. In the previous two seasons, fans saw Daemon hungry for power and had the desire to sit on the Iron Throne. But, after his visit to Harrenhal, he realised Rhaenyra is the only rightful heir and would now do anything to have her sit the Throne. His unpredictable nature and ruthless drive will likely create both chaos and tension.
