Season 3 of House of the Dragon will break a stunt record previously set by Game of Thrones, with 23 stunt performers ignited in a single take during the Battle of the Gullet. The record was originally 20 performers in Season 7’s “Spoils of War,” but the new sequence surpasses it, making TV history.
Three‑bullet summary
- House of the Dragon Season 3 ignited 23 stunt performers in one take, breaking the TV record set by Game of Thrones (20).
- The Guinness World Record remains 32 performers, achieved in Cape Town in 2018.
- The Battle of the Gullet used massive resources—3M liters of water, 200 tons of steel, and 25 tons of propane—to stage the spectacle.
How the record was broken
Emmy‑winning stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam explained in a behind‑the‑scenes featurette that the team realized they could push past the existing benchmark. “This season called for a big burn. It called for 20 guys, if we just add three people to that, it would be a world record.” With 23 stunt people set ablaze simultaneously, the production achieved the largest fire stunt ever filmed for television.
The sequence was part of the Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval clash staged with three million liters of water, 200 tons of steel, and 25 tons of propane. Special effects supervisor Mike Dawson joked it was “just a normal day in special effects,” underscoring the scale of the operation.
Previous record holders
The prior television record was set in Game of Thrones Season 7’s “The Spoils of War”, when Daenerys attacked the Lannister army with Drogon. That episode featured 20 stunt performers on fire at once, also coordinated by Rowley Irlam.

However, the official Guinness World Record for most people performing full body burns is higher: 32 stunt professionals ignited in Cape Town, South Africa, in January 2018, organized by Paradigm Shift Special Effects. While House of the Dragon’s achievement is specifically noted as the largest stunt burn in TV history, it does not surpass the Guinness benchmark set in live events.
