House of the Dragon Season 3 continues to raise the bar for the HBO fantasy drama, not only through its large-scale battles but also with its ambitious production design. One of the biggest additions this season is Tumbleton, the Reach market town that becomes increasingly important as the Targaryen conflict escalates.
Rather than relying primarily on visual effects, the production team constructed an enormous practical set to bring the location to life. According to showrunner Ryan Condal, Tumbleton is the largest set the series has ever built—surpassing even King’s Landing in scale.

As Season 3 introduces Tumbleton ahead of its growing role in the civil war, Condal explained that the production wanted the town to feel like a real, lived-in location rather than a temporary backdrop. That ambition resulted in the largest physical set ever created for House of the Dragon.
“It’s three quarters of an acre. It is literally a whole town. It’s the biggest set we’ve ever built. As anybody that’s read the book knows that Tumbleton plays a major role, and we wanted to introduce it in a big way.”
In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Tumbleton becomes one of the most strategically significant locations during the Dance of the Dragons. Its introduction in Season 3 lays the groundwork for future developments in the war, making it important for the series to establish the town as a fully realized setting. By investing in a practical build instead of relying entirely on CGI, the production gives actors a tangible environment that enhances the realism of everyday life in Westeros before the conflict reaches the town.

Condal also revealed just how massive the construction was, offering a comparison with one of the franchise’s most recognizable locations. He said, “It is twice the size of King’s Landing. It’s a big build. A lot of tube. A lot of fittings. The footprint of the set, it’s 75 meters by 140 meters.”
The dimensions underscore the production’s commitment to expanding the world of House of the Dragon as the Dance of the Dragons spreads beyond the capital. While King’s Landing has remained the political center of the conflict, Season 3 shifts much of the action to new regions across Westeros, requiring equally detailed locations that can support large armies, dragon sequences and major battle scenes.
The expansive Tumbleton set also reflects the increasing scope of the series. As the war intensifies, House of the Dragon is moving beyond palace intrigue into a story that spans the Seven Kingdoms. Building a town of this size allows the production to stage large-scale military movements, civilian life and the far-reaching consequences of the civil war in a way that feels grounded, making Tumbleton one of Season 3’s most significant new locations.
