House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 4 finally confirms that Helaena Targaryen is pregnant. Book readers know that King Aegon II Targaryen and Helaena have three children, but the series omitted their youngest child during its first two seasons.
This isn’t the first time an HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s work has left out characters. Game of Thrones famously excluded Lady Stoneheart, Arianne Martell, and several others. Until now, many fans feared that Prince Maelor Targaryen would meet the same fate. Helaena’s pregnancy, however, appears to solve one of the show’s biggest book-to-screen challenges.
The clue hidden in Episode 2
House of the Dragon Season 3 has placed Helaena at the center of several key moments. While earlier seasons established her gift for prophecy, Episode 2 included another subtle hint that many viewers may have overlooked.

During a quiet scene in the Godswood, Alicent Hightower urges Helaena to leave King’s Landing with her. Before Alicent arrives, Helaena studies a caterpillar and remarks:

“This is strange. It isn’t the season.”
Many fans interpreted the line as symbolic. Caterpillars and butterflies often represent transformation and new beginnings, leading some viewers to speculate that Helaena’s words hinted at her future pregnancy. Episode 4 appears to confirm those theories, revealing that Helaena is expecting another child – the role that Prince Maelor fills in Fire & Blood.
Why Maelor’s return matters
George R.R. Martin has repeatedly stressed the importance of faithfully adapting his work. Following Season 2, he reportedly criticized changes surrounding the Blood and Cheese storyline and suggested that omitting Maelor would create a significant “butterfly effect.”
Season 3 now appears to address that concern.
Speaking with IGN, showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that Helaena’s pregnancy is intended to introduce the show’s version of Maelor.
“Helaena being pregnant is a major complication for her given the fact that she’s literally in Rhaenyra’s shadow and her captive. And if that child is a boy, it’s going to be very problematic for both Rhaenyra, and for her, and for Alicent.”
He added:
“So it felt like a way to keep alive certain threads in the book in a way that sort of suited the plot, I think, and the story that we’re telling here in our version, our adaptation of The Dance of the Dragons.”
Although Maelor will enter the story much later than he does in Fire & Blood, his inclusion preserves one of the book’s most important story threads while allowing the series to follow its own adaptation. It also answers one of the biggest concerns readers had after Season 2.
