When people think of House of the Dragon, they usually think of dragons. Vhagar, Syrax, Vermithor, and the rest of the Targaryens’ flying arsenal have dominated the series since its premiere. But according to Ryan Condal, one of the most important storylines in the show’s final season won’t be about dragons at all. Instead, it will center on a growing force that has quietly been shaping Westeros from the beginning: the Faith.
Quick read:
- The Faith will become more important.
- Season 4 explores religion versus dragons.
- Condal calls it a major ongoing theme.
Ryan Condal says the Faith is central to the endgame
Speaking to Business Insider after the season 3 finale, Condal pointed to religion as one of the key themes that will continue into the final chapter of the series.
“This is a theme that we’ve set up that you’re going to see continuing to play out over the final chapter, the final acts of our show — this idea of the Faith.”
The comment comes after a season that increasingly highlighted tensions between traditional Westerosi institutions and the Targaryens’ belief in their own exceptionalism.
While dragons remain the most visible symbol of Targaryen power, Condal’s remarks suggest that spiritual authority may become just as important as military power in determining Westeros’ future.

The Targaryens’ beliefs put them at odds with the realm
Condal went on to describe the fundamental conflict between the Faith and House Targaryen.
“Essentially, most of the realm holds to the Faith. It’s the Catholicism of this era.”
By contrast, he described the Targaryens as outsiders whose worldview differs dramatically from that of the people they rule.
“And then you have the Targaryens, who come in as this pagan race, who believe in blood magic and fire and their own godlike supremacy. Their gods are gigantic nuclear lizards that you can smell, touch, see, and hear.”
It’s one of the clearest explanations yet of a conflict that has simmered beneath the surface for years. While the Dance of the Dragons may be fought with armies and dragonfire, Condal appears to be framing part of the final season as a clash between two very different systems of belief.
As the series approaches its conclusion, fans may find that the biggest threat to Targaryen dominance isn’t another dragon. It could be the people of Westeros themselves.
