In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the moment Egg reveals his true identity as Aegon V Targaryen stands out as a pivotal twist. It happens during a tense puppet show confrontation between Dunk and Aerion at the Tourney of Ashford Meadow. When Aerion mocks Egg’s shaved head, Egg retorts that he cut his hair to avoid looking like his brother, confirming his royal bloodline.

This not only saves Dunk the from immediate harm but propels the story into higher stakes, with Egg’s family now in pursuit. Showrunner Ira Parker, in an exclusive interview with The Wrap, shared how he crafted this scene with input from House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal.

What was Ryan Condal’s advice?

Ira Parker had initially aimed to keep Egg’s secret under wraps, despite leaks like a Comic-Con slip-up to 5,000 fans. But he had “made [his] peace with it a long time ago.” But, Condal’s key advice reshaped the approach. He advised to treat Egg’s identity not as a strict plot point but as a “character attribute” that could emerge earlier.

This allowed Parker to build layered tension. For book readers or spoiled viewers, it created anticipation around when Dunk would learn the truth, with subtle hints scattered throughout. For unspoiled audiences, it delivered a twist at the end of episode 3, catapulting the season forward.

Parker emphasized the dual appeal saying,

“It was important for the people who do know… you get this whole extra layer of when is Dunk going to find out… And if you haven’t had it spoiled, you get a nice twist at the end of Episode 3.”

He hoped to portray Egg as “the Stable Boy” until the reveal, enhancing surprise while rewarding lore fans. The moment has however been praised for its emotional depth and integration, contributing to the show’s strong reception and season 2 renewal. Ryan Condal himself is all set to return with House of the Dragon season 3 in June 2026.
