With his small stature and shaved head, Ansell has the perfect physicality for Egg. He also naturally captures the young squire’s sharp wit, making the character feel all the more convincing.

Dunk was a young orphan boy from Flea’s Bottom when Ser Arlan took him in as his squire. He sees his younger self in Egg and wants only to help him. Claffey said, “He’s [Egg’s] like, ‘I’m from King’s Landing.’ And I think Dunk sees that– he sees himself. He’s like, ‘That’s my– I was a complete blow-in from Flea Bottom,’ and he sees himself meeting Ser Arlan and just, like, has empathy, I suppose, and sort of love for that sort of young lad trying to do what he can do.”

Claffey added that when Dunk told Egg what being his squire entailed, the young boy’s lit up and he wanted to have the life as a squire and become a knight when he is older. In that sense, both characters recognize what they can offer and gain from one another.
