George R.R. Martin‘s Game of Thrones prequel novella series inspired HBO’s new spinoff show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The first season, which premiered on January 18, is based on the novella, The Hedge Knight. It follows the journey of a hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall, aka Dunk, and his nine-year-old scribe, Egg, in the Ashford Meadow tournament. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin revealed the inspiration behind The Tales of Dunk and Egg.

George R.R. Martin got candid about his motivation for writing the Dunk and Egg prequel stories
In his chat with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the show’s premiere on HBO, Martin addressed the reason he wrote The Tales of Dunk and Egg. He said, “I had the idea that I wanted to write a prequel, so I would set it before A Game of Thrones sort of in passing. ‘And no, I’ll set this entire one around a tournament.’ One thing or another, Dunk and Egg came from somewhere.”
The author explained that all the Game of Thrones characters did not exist then. He believes “there are stories that write themselves.” He added, “They come alive and you think of them every day and you dream about them at night. I mean, this story and the characters Dunk and Egg really came alive on me.”

The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been already greenlit. It will be faithful to the next novella in the series, The Sworn Sword. That will leave just one more novella for adaptation. However, Martin seems to have other plans. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “The big issue is that I have only written three novellas, and I have a lot more stories about Dunk and Egg in my f*cking head. I’ve got to get them down on paper.”
He also revealed that he began writing two stories last year. One of them is set in Winterfell and the other in the Riverlands. So, the future of the series might be brighter than it appears to be now.
