Dialect coach Erik Singer takes a look at idiolects, better known as the specific way one individual speaks. To best break down this concept, Erik analyzes some actors playing real people. 1. See i loved Cuba Gooding Jr as OJ because I thought oh no I love Cuba and don’t like OJ and if I watch this I will not like Cuba too.. but that’s how we used to see OJ as well. We used to love him and now everyone hates him.. I think Cuba is one of the few people that can play as OJ and make us believe he could be him even if he doesn’t try to act just like him.

  2. If I may, I'd like to offer my own observation on the Julia Child example. The disparity that I sense between Meryl's version and the real Julia is that Meryl is affecting a more snooty British aristocrat sound, bringing in the tongue curled vowels and the bubbly flow to the speech. Whereas the real Julia is a much more airy, dramatic head voice, spoken with most of the articulation in the back of the mouth rather than the front. Julia also seems to speak somewhat through her nose, which gives it that airy sound; almost like speaking through a trombone with the muffler attached.

  3. I think with the OJ impression, it makes you feel a lot more sympathetic towards the character, with the real OJ when he says he wants the trail to be over it sounds like he can't be bothered and just wants it to end, whereas with the impression it sounds like he's just drained and doesn't want to continue so the audience feels much more for him
