Better than Game of Thrones? We’re in (Picture: Hbo/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock)

After exasperated fans continually called their criminally underrated favourite show ‘better than Game of Thrones’ it’s finally coming to Netflix.

On January 1, multiple seasons (likely to be all four) of Black Sails will finally be landing on the streaming service and, judging by reactions from its fans, will deserve your attention.

Black Sails serves as a prequel to the 1883 novel Treasure Island and ran for 38 episodes across four seasons between 2014 and 2017, starring The Umbrella Academy’s Tom Hopper, Tony Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy and Zach McGowan.

While Black Sails went under too many radars, it still won three primetime Emmy Awards and still scores an impressive 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Often described as ‘queer pirate’ show by fans, Black Sails was essentially a blood-thirsty treasure hunt which was drowned out of attention by airing at the same time as Game of Thrones.

However, many thought then and still think today that Black Sails should have been paid its dues and actually delivered with its ending – unlike another fantasy epic…

Scurvy Bones wrote on X: ‘Everything society gave to Game of Thrones should have been given to Black Sails. 4 seasons of heart wrenching character writing, wonderful period-piece visuals, well directed action, and incredible acting.

‘Watch this show immediately. Toby Stephens should have won multiple Emmys.’

Meegs agreed: ‘I will be saying this for at least the next twenty years And, Black Sails stuck the landing! Better than any other complex story I can even think of.’

A One Hat Town went as far as calling Black Sails the ‘best show I have ever watched’. They continued: ‘While it breaks my heart that it doesn’t have a bigger fandom i love that I get to introduce friends to it.’

Phobos noted: ‘Not to mention actual powerful queer representation & a good ending.’

Game of Thrones’ ending was notoriously panned by critics and fans when it reached its climax in 2019. More than one million people signed a petition demanding it was rewritten with a ‘competent’ team.

Sadly, for now, Black Sails will only be coming to Netflix US but it is available to stream in the UK on Starz.
