New Force Abilities Explained: How The Last Jedi Changed the Force Forever

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Holy crap! The Last Jedi is here and WOW! There’s a lot I like about the film and a lot that I don’t, but I wanted to focus on what this film changed about the Force. There’s a bunch of new Force abilities that are shown, and they change how we view the Force. I wanted to break it all down and explain why it makes sense to the hardcore fans. Let’s talk about it!

Our Humble Beginnings: The Den of Nerds started as the personal YouTube channel of our founder, Joshua Lucas. Josh is a comic book writer and editor, but more importantly, he’s a HUGE Nerd. He started making videos on June 15th 2016. The goal back then was to just talk about Nerdy things, but quickly Josh found that his interests had changed. Soon after, he formed a new vision for what The Den of Nerds could and should be.

The Changing State of Media: Media Is going through the most massive shift in the past hundred years. Everything is going digital, direct to market, and mobile. The best and worst part of this is that there are no more gatekeepers. Anyone and everyone can put their content out there and reach a mass audience. However, the new gatekeeper is the algorithm. In order to get stuff in front of people, certain practices are done which hurt quality. In this world, where established networks are now fighting for views against thousands of YouTube personalities and bloggers, ALL of these people have forgotten the most important part of this equation. That is the value for the end consumer. That is something we will NEVER do. How will we figure out how to add value to our audience? It’s simple; we’ll ACTUALLY interact with them and we’ll actually CARE.

Our Vision: We want to become the ESPN of Nerdy things, but obviously with some changes. We imagine a place and time where we have high quality and personalized content put out every day that serves Nerds around the world. We want to be hyper interactive with our viewers on Social Media and in person. Simply put, we exist to expand the fun in YOUR life! Becoming a major player in reporting, programming, and covering Nerdy things is how we plan to do that!

  1. can you please make a video about reylo/kylo redemption? Everyone thinks he'll die but that's exactly what happened with Vader. He's young with his whole life ahead and Rey also saw his future…

  2. So do rey and kylo actually show any abilities especially kylo because he should be able to pull and freeze people and mess people up. Honestly this movie is really dissapointing with Snoke and Luke and if Rey and Kylo dont do anything but the stupid force bond and dont show any physical force powers to fuck people up then that sucks!

  3. Josh congrats man, 10k+ subs is impressive….most impr….aah you know that, I dont have to tell you! Grateful for yr YT chan and look forward to all the SW movies etc we have to look to the horizon for! “Never his mind on where he was, hmm?” YES Yoda, thats the true nature of a SW fan! 4. I really like your videos. You have a very clear and concise way of explaining things. And I am so glad that you are so positive about The Last Jedi. I’ve been surprised by the amount of negative responses to TLJ. Frankly, this movie was even better than I expected, and I expected it to be very good.I have a couple of comments in relation to this video. I have reason to believe that Snoke was lying about his role in creating the Force bond. My reasoning for this is that there is evidence of some connection between these two characters from quite early in The Force Awakens novelization. Rey catches a glimpse of Kylo shortly after he exits his shuttle on Takodana. Her inner thoughts are that she has seen this figure before in daydream, in a nightmare. Once Kylo has immobilized Rey in a Force freeze and begins to probe her mind he senses something familiar there. The references to that shared feeling, or that sense of familiarity continue throughout their interactions culminating when Rey pulls the light saber to her and ignites it. At that moment, in the novelization, Kylo literally says, “It is you!” All of this seems to point to some sort of connection between these two that may have always been there. I couldn’t begin to tell you the hows or whys of that. Perhaps it is just destiny, like Snoke said “Darkness rises and light to meet it.” Snoke may have influenced it, but I don’t think he was the one who created it. Snoke has been manipulating Kylo for years and I can easily believe that he sensed the presence of this bond and took advantage of it. As you pointed out, he appears to be able to read minds exceptionally well, and knows Kylo inside out at this time. Perhaps the bond was dormant inside Kylo and Rey until they crossed paths, or until they were inside each other’s minds in the interrogation scene. If Rian Johnson disregarded all these points from the novelization and made Snoke the one who initiated their bond, then as you said, the bond is continuing on past Snoke’s death. And as far as I understand Force bonds are for life.

I do think that it was clever that in the first instance of the Force bond, Kylo makes the observation that Rey could not be projecting herself across the galaxy to where he was. As he said, that would kill you. The bond makes that type of communication possible. So when it was revealed that Luke was projecting himself to Crait, we understood that this took an enormous amount of energy and power, due to Kylo’s earlier comment.

After reflecting on the movie, I think it is very clever of Rian Johnson to have Kylo kill Snoke in the second movie of this trilogy. In the first place, it gives Kylo great agency by killing his longtime abuser. And both Rian and Andy Serkis made it clear that Snoke was a type of predator, who took advantage of vulnerable individuals and manipulated them. It was just as important that Kylo killed Snoke for himself as it was for protecting Rey. But after years on this path, Kylo could only see this as an opportunity for him to ascend to the position of supreme leader himself. He is now his own worst enemy. And I believe that this means episode nine will in large part be a battle for Ben Solo’s soul. While he tells Rey to forget the past, he is flailing because he cannot do the same. I still believe there is a great chance for a redemption arc for Kylo/Ben. But Rey cannot save him, just like Luke told Leia that he could not save him. The only person that can save him is himself. Because that is how real redemption works. Rey can give Ben a reason to change his life. But he is going to have to make peace with what he has done and what others have done to him. I think we saw a glimpse of that opportunity in the final exchange between Kylo and Rey. He looked like a sad, hurt boy while he gazed at Rey through their bond, while kneeling on the ground in front of a bright white light, as Han’s dice disappeared from his grasp.

At the beginning of episode 9, I expect Kylo will still be handling Rey’s rejection poorly. Even though he had a moment of clarity at the end of this movie, I expect the new Supreme Leader to be back to making irrational decisions as he struggles with his past and his conflict. I expect General Hux to be looking for the opportunity to stab him in the back without getting Force chocked or slammed into a wall. But I really hope that by the end, Ben will have the necessary growth and take the right path. I believe that he and Rey are destined to do the opposite of what Padme and Anakin did, thus bringing the Skywalker story full circle. Perhaps they will chart a new path for Force users, a balanced path, where the light and dark are no longer battling for dominance. Resolving the Grey through refined Jedi sight.

  5. The physical manifestation thing that Luke did was THE SAME THING YODA DID with EZRA in Season 2 of REBELS when Ezra said "Master Yoda, there you are." and Yoda replied, "And here are you." when EZRA COULD SEE HIM. — YODA was ALIVE on DAGOBAH sitting on a fallen tree in that scene too. It was when Ezra, Kanan and Ahsoka went to contact Yoda to find out how to stop the Sith/Inquisitors and Yoda said "Go to Malachor"
