A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms doesn’t pretend to be high-minded prestige television, and showrunner Ira Parker wants you to know that straight up. When critics started losing their minds over the opening episode’s defecation scene, Parker basically threw his hands up and said “okay, listen—that’s literally all we’ve got.” The man made a genuine promise about the show’s approach to bathroom humor, and honestly, it’s refreshing to hear a creator just own what their show actually is.

Only three poop jokes in the entire series

Here’s the thing that drives Parker crazy: people won’t stop asking about the poop. Like, it’s not a mystery that needs solving. “I swear to God, I only use three poop jokes this entire series, [but] everybody keeps asking questions about these,” Parker said at a press day, before adding, “And I promise they’re all character-based.”

Three. That’s it. Three bathroom moments across the entire season, and yet every interview somehow circles back to the toilet humor. It’s almost funny how a showrunner trying to ground his world in reality gets reduced to the butt jokes (pun absolutely intended).

Why Dunk’s got an earthy, gritty stomach

Parker didn’t just throw in random poop scenes for shock value—there’s actual character logic behind them. “We’re an unpolished show. We’re showing it as it is, and this is a part of life. Dunk has a shpilkes Jewish stomach, like me. So every now and then, he hears that call to greatness, and his nerves get the better of him.” It’s the kind of specificity that grounds the character in something real.

Parker went on to defend the whole earthy approach: “Come on, people. We don’t have to be so high[-minded] all the time — we have plenty of [serious drama] in this show. We are an earthy show. We are a gritty show.” In a world where prestige TV constantly takes itself so seriously, there’s something genuinely fun about Parker saying: look, sometimes characters poop. Deal with it.
