House of the Dragon now has an official endgame. Showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that the Game of Thrones prequel will conclude with season 4, locking in a four‑season plan to finish the Dance of the Dragons. Speaking about the current state of production and what comes next, Condal explained that the writers’ room is already at work on the final chapter.

“Only one more season left” for the Dance of the Dragons
Appearing on the Escape Hatch podcast, Condal described how different work on the show feels now that the finish line is in sight. “We’re getting rough cuts and early material. I feel good. I’m walking a lot more now — commuting into central London on foot and by tube — which has been good for me. It really feels like we’ve turned a big page here. Knowing there’s only one more season left, it feels like we can leave it all out on the field. We’ve started the writing process for Season 4, which will be the last one,” he said.
The comment builds on what Condal has hinted since 2024, when he first said the show was designed as a three‑additional‑seasons arc after season 1, aiming to tell the full story of the Targaryen civil war in four seasons total. Now, with season 3 in post‑production and HBO already renewing the series for a fourth outing, that plan has effectively been ratified: the Dance will end on screen with season 4, currently expected to air in 2028.
What a four‑season run means for the story
Condal has previously said the writers mapped out the “final destination” of the series and then rebalanced events to create three more “great seasons” after season 1, making sure each run had its own dramatic spine. Season 2 armed both sides and pushed the conflict into a tense cold‑war phase; season 3, now in post‑production, is set to feature the war “boiling over” with some of the biggest battles from Fire & Blood, including the long‑teased Battle of the Gullet.
