The premiere date for the latest Game of Thrones prequel has finally been announced—A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut on HBO Max in January 2026. The series adapts George R. R. Martin’s beloved Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, with each season covering one story. Season 1 will follow The Hedge Knight, introducing Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg as they embark on a misadventure tied to the Targaryen royal family.
While the series includes the dragonlords, it stands apart from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon by completely removing dragons and magic. Fans will remember that before Daenerys restored the dragons, Westeros endured a long age without them—a result of the devastating civil war depicted in House of the Dragon. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms explores this quiet aftermath, set in a grounded, magic-free world.

Showrunner Ira Parker explains why there is no magic in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Ira Parker explained that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place in a very different version of Westeros — one where magic and dragons are long gone. Set around fifty years after the death of the last dragon, the new Game of Thrones prequel explores a world that has moved beyond myth. Parker said the Targaryens are now struggling to maintain authority without the power that once defined their dynasty. He said:
“They find themselves finally without the thing that put them in power, which is such a precarious position to be in.”
He added that this era is far more grounded than the fire-and-blood politics of the previous series.
“Nobody’s thinking about magic. This could basically be 14th century Britain. This is hard-nose, grind-it-out, gritty, medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch.”
Parker described the show as a “ground-up” story about ordinary people, rather than lords and kings, with its focus on hedge knights, armorers, and performers, rather than royal courts.
Leading the cast is Irish actor Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, a humble but honorable knight trying to make his way through the Seven Kingdoms. Newcomer Dexter Sol Ansell stars as Egg, the mysterious young boy who becomes Dunk’s squire and companion on the road. Their relationship forms the emotional core of the series, offering a smaller, character-driven story compared to the epic scope of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO and Max in January 2026. Fans won’t have to wait long for a first look — the debut trailer is expected to drop this Thursday, October 9, during the show’s New York Comic Con panel.
