Every week, Josh Hill and I read through a chapter of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin’s as-yet-unfinished magnum opus, mining it for meaning. It’s A Song of Dan and Josh, and we made it just for you.

At this point, we’re deep into A Clash of Kings, and ready to check in on the wayward prince of the Iron Islands. How is Theon Greyjoy faring now that he’s back among his family?

Basically, this is the ongoing story of Theon’s humiliation. Guy definitely has a pattern: he comes in arrogant as can be, swaggers around the room for a bit, and then someone — usually a family member — cuts him down to size. It happened in the last chapter with Balon, and it happens in this chapter with Asha, who bursts onto the scene in a blaze of well-earned confidence.

Josh and I talk about Theon’s unfortunate loop, his sympathetic core, the discreet charm of Wex, and why Asha’s name was changed for the show. Things are gonna get a lot worse before they get better, Theon. Sorry.

Next week, we return to King’s Landing for Tyrion VI. Man, that guy is busy this book. Watch our discussion live this upcoming Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. CST on our Facebook page!
