If you thought A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was going to be the end of George R.R. Martin‘s grand return to Westeros on screen, well, think again. The man himself—appearing as the first guest on HBO Max’s official companion podcast for the prequel—has dropped some tantalizing hints about what’s coming down the pipeline. And spoiler alert: there’s way more where Dunk and Egg are coming from.

Quick read:

  • George R.R. Martin teased more Dunk and Egg stories in an exclusive podcast appearance.

  • He praised The Hedge Knight as one of his best creative decisions as a writer.

  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already renewed for season 2 ahead of its premiere.

Martin’s Passion for the Dunk and Egg Universe

During an exclusive appearance on the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms companion podcast (hosted by Jason Concepcion and Greta Johnsen), Martin let slip exactly what fans have been dying to know. “There are more stories to tell about Dunk and Egg and their education and what’s going to befall them in future years,” he said, basically confirming that this is just the beginning.

Here’s the thing that really matters: Martin isn’t just saying this because he’s contractually obligated to hype up the franchise. He genuinely loves these characters and their world. In the same podcast appearance, he went off about The Hedge Knight (the novella that inspired A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) like an author talking about their favorite creation. “That was one of the best decisions I ever made as a writer,” he said about the story.

The Westeros Universe Keeps Expanding

It’s worth remembering that Martin has been pretty active in developing multiple spinoffs. House of the Dragon is already underway, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is launching, and there are other prequels, sequels, and animated projects in various stages of development at HBO. But what stands out here is how personally invested Martin seems in the Dunk and Egg stories specifically.

The author explained his approach to the character-focused storytelling in these tales: “I wanted to tell a story that focused to some extent on the small folk, on the people who are not lords, they were not contending, they weren’t even going to get the Iron Throne unless everybody else in Westeros died.” That’s a fundamentally different approach from Game of Thrones, and it’s working. Fans are excited, critics are intrigued, and Martin is clearly excited about where these characters can go.
