The Witcher had a lot riding on its third season, most of which is now out on Netflix. Not only is it actor Henry Cavill’s final time playing Geralt of Rivia before he’s replaced by Liam Hemsworth in season 4, but it’s also adapting some of the most important events from Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher book series. Before season 3, season 2 strayed wildly from the source material and the The Witcher: Blood Origin spinoff flopped, so season 3 had a lot of goodwill to make up.

Fortunately, it seems to be doing just that for the most part. Sure, the ratings aren’t as high as last season, but the show itself is surprisingly strong this time around. The first five episodes released in late June and ended on an enormous cliffhanger as Geralt and Yennefer finally discovered the identity of the mage who’s been behind many of their recent woes.

The final three episodes of the season will bring that conflict to a head. Check out the new trailer:

The Witcher season 3 volume 2 looks like a bloodbath

It looks like pretty much everybody on the Continent is having a pretty rough time. We start out with the magical ring which floated over the Thanedd ball collapsing, reflected in the eyes of someone covered in blood; that looks a lot like Scoia’tael leader Francesca Findabaire to me. A showdown between the Scoia’tael and the mages at Thanedd seems imminent.

There’re also Geralt fighting that dastardly mage we mentioned, Ciri evading a giant monster in a desert, and footage of basically every one of our major characters looking like they’re on the verge of a breakdown. Thanedd is a highlight, with some truly epic shots that show mages putting their magic to the test as the ballroom collapses around them.

“We didn’t come this far just to abandon each other,” Geralt tells Ciri and Yennefer, looking as exhausted as we’ve ever seen him. Something tells me it won’t be quite that simple. Hard times lie ahead for our favorite monster-hunting found family.

The Witcher season 3 volume 2 premieres July 27 on Netflix.
