Showrunner Ryan Condal has made it clear that the series will remain deeply loyal to George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, even as it heads into its darkest chapters yet. Talking to GamesRadar in a recent press conference, Condal addressed expectations for Season 3 and beyond, acknowledging the inherently grim nature of the story while promising to balance brutality with moments of humanity.

No happy endings in Westeros
When asked about the tone of the upcoming season, Condal was candid:
“I mean, I don’t know. Do we really expect happy endings in Westeros? I think this show goes to extremely dark places — places we’ve been, places we’re yet to go.”
He emphasized that Season 3 represents the true escalation of the Dance of the Dragons, where the conflict becomes relentless and the consequences grow devastating. The show is drawing heavily from the historical period known as “The Anarchy” — a brutal civil war in medieval England over whether a woman could rule, which mirrors the Targaryen family tearing itself apart over Rhaenyra’s claim.

Staying faithful to the books
Condal confirmed that the creative team is committed to a faithful adaptation:
“We’re crafting a very faithful adaptation of Fire & Blood and the history of Westeros at this point.”
However, he also acknowledged one of the biggest challenges in adapting the source material:
“One of the big challenges of adapting Fire & Blood is not making this an aimless, bleak death march, just because of the nature of the history.”
The goal, according to Condal, is to maintain the story’s darkness while still offering glimmers of hope and humanity:
“Even the slimmest glimmers of light in the rain of the darkest storm, the single light through the cloud seems that much brighter.”
Looking ahead to Season 4
While promoting Season 3, Condal also touched on the writing process for the final season. He revealed that the team is actively working on Season 4 and is mindful of giving the audience something meaningful to hold onto by the end:
“I would say leaving the audience with something to hang their hat on at the end is something I’m taking very to heart, as we’re now writing Season 4.”
He added that the story will explore whether the Targaryens learn anything from this self-destructive chapter of their history, even if traditional happy endings are off the table.
Condal’s comments reassure book readers that the show will honour the major events and tragic tone of Fire & Blood, while also signaling that the writers are working hard to deliver emotional depth and payoff. Season 3 is shaping up to be the darkest and most intense chapter yet, but it won’t be without moments of light and humanity.
With the Season 3 premiere just around the corner, fans can expect a faithful, brutal, and emotionally complex continuation of the Dance of the Dragons.
