Sequels and prequels make the world go around, and we’ve got news about several. First up, The A.V. Club reports that we’re getting a sequel to Cruella, the recent live-action Disney origin story about the 101 Dalmatians villain.
The movie just came out the other week, so you know it did well. Director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are both slated to return. Emma Stone isn’t yet signed on to play Cruella herself again, but you figure that’s gotta be in the works cause this won’t really work without her.
A prequel to Master and Commander is coming
So Cruella is a sequel to a prequel…we’re deep down the Hollywood hole there. This next one’s a little simpler: Deadline reports that 20th Century has hired Chaos Walking author Patrick Ness to develop a prequel Peter Weir’s 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which is a really, really good movie about a naval voyage during the Napoleonic Wars, buoyed by great chemistry between Russell Crowe (as Captain Jack Aubrey) and Paul Bettany (surgeon Stephen Maturin).
That movie was based on three books by Patrick O’Brian, who wrote fully 20 books about Jack Aubrey’s naval career. The new movie would adapt books from earlier in the saga, and cast younger actors in the Crowe and Bettany roles.
Finally, journalist Eric Davis shared that the script for A Quiet Place Part III, which is due out in 2023, has been turned in! That according to a conversation he had with John Krasinski, who made the first two movies. This time he’s handing over writer and directing duties to Jeff Nichols.
