*Warning: This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of Westworld season 3.

Game of Thrones author George RR Martin was behind the HBO epic’s blindsiding crossover with Westworld last night which was a monumental moment for fantasy fans.

During its latest episode, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) investigated why Maeve (Thandie Newton) disappeared by diving into the park’s tech labs, only to find a familiar face from Game of Thrones.

Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) only surviving dragon, Drogon, is now an attraction at the parks Medieval World where GoT showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are now working as technicians.

This happened. For real.

Westworld showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan revealed George was actually the mastermind of smashing the two juggernauts together.

Yes, that was Dorgon in Westworld (Picture: HBO)

‘George had consistently since the first season said, “We’ve got to do a tie-in with ‘Game of Thrones.’” People forget that George was originally a TV writer and he came up in the TV world in which you’d occasionally have these crossover shows, which the fans would f**king freak out over. So George had always been pitching the crossover show,’ Jonathan told Variety

And they could have gone even further. Jonathan claimed George was up for a full ‘Game of Thrones world’.

‘If he lived in Los Angeles, we would surely have insisted that he come and hang out on our set as well,’ he added.

While we try to digest TV’s best-kept secret, Westworld’s latest instalment left plenty of unanswered questions ahead of episode three. Feast on those.

Westworld airs Sundays at 9pm on HBO in the US and is simulcast on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
