One of the biggest departures from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood in the Season 3 premiere was the complete absence of Rhaenyra’s sons Aegon III (Aegon the Younger) and Viserys II from the Battle of the Gullet.
In the book, these two young princes play a central and tragic role in the naval battle. So why were they written out?
Ryan Condal’s official explanation
Showrunner Ryan Condal addressed the change directly in a recent IGN interview:
“Her youngest children are just not of an age where you can involve them with complex dramatic sequences, complex action. It’s not safe, it’s not practical. So it was just something that we had to dispense of rather early on in the process.”
He further explained that the decision stemmed from the show’s compressed timeline:

“That was just one of the many challenges of making the show and telling a story that involves so many children, very young children… particularly in our case where we had to compress history a little bit just to make Season 1 take place over 20 years instead of 30 years. So it just meant all of the children in the story are a little bit younger.”

Book vs. Show ages & The Gullet sequence
In Fire & Blood, during the Battle of the Gullet:
- Aegon (around 9) and Viserys (around 7) are sailing to Pentos for safety.
- Their ship is attacked.
- Aegon escapes on his young dragon Stormcloud, which is mortally wounded in the process.
- Viserys is captured and later ransomed.
This sequence is emotionally devastating and crucial for Aegon III’s lifelong trauma and fear of dragons. In the show, the boys (with Daemon) were sent to Pentos at the end of Season 2, but they are portrayed as toddlers, making it impossible to involve them in intense action without risking the child actors or relying heavily on CGI and stunt doubles.

Practical & safety reasons
Condal emphasized that working with very young children in large-scale battle sequences is extremely difficult. Complex action choreography, water work and stunts and long filming hours are not suited for children.
The production team decided early on that it wasn’t feasible, choosing instead to focus on other characters (like Jace, Addam, and the dragonseeds) for the battle.
Will they return?
Condal reassured fans that Aegon and Viserys are not being removed from the story permanently:
“It’s not to say that those characters are out of the show or anything. We all realize what an important role they play as Rhaenyra’s sons with Daemon and the heirs to their particular bloodline… We haven’t forgotten about any of that.”
Their absence simply required “changes and adaptations” to keep the production safe and practical.
