Constantly being circled as an important character in the Second Season of House of The Dragon, Aemond now holds the authoritative influence after his elder brother and King Aegon II suffered severe injuries in the Battle of Rook’s Rest.
This world is turning very slowly for the Targaryens amidst the battle between The Greens and The Blacks. Aemond is very well aware of his and his dragon Vhagar’s robustness and the fact that he has one of the largest dragons in Westeros after Balerion, The Black Dread.Whether he will seize the opportunity of becoming a person of utmost power is yet to be unfolded.
Will Aemond give up on his opportunity to be king?
Aemond is a character who has experienced a lot of trauma right from his childhood. Otto Hightower once said to him, “You only lost one eye how could be you so blind”. This one sentence might have revolved in his mind for too long. He is very well aware of the chaotic world around him. We have seen much ruthlessness in his personality. Had he intended to slay his brother, he would have done so during the Battle of Rook’s Rest. He has left his brother with no power to rule but to follow his orders. Such was his intention for his brother after he experienced a series of insults from him earlier. In an interview with Variety, Ewan Mitchell said,
“Aemond has a multitude of motivations. One of them is that he wants to be the war hero, and to be seen as this nigh-unkillable force, very similar to the Rogue Prince, the younger Daemon Targaryen. Especially because Aemond wields the largest singular power in Vhagar, with that power comes a great responsibility. He has to be seen as someone who can capably control that power. It ultimately means that in his mind has to be the person who wins the war for the Greens.”
Does Aemond see Aegon as his enemy?
Aemond is prepared to do whatever it takes to gain the utmost power. In a conversation between him and the Grand Maester Orwyle he wishes for Aegon II’s slow recovery. He is seen intimidating his brother as Aegon’s survival might be a major threat to his regency. Once Aegon is fully recovered, he might unfold the doings of his brother. Therefore Aemond will try his best to let Aegon be under his shade. Even Ewan Mitchell, the actor playing the role of Aemond mentions,
“He’s prepared to do the necessary evil. That’s the thing with Aemond, he doesn’t necessarily consider other people’s perspectives in the situation. He’s got his own singular vision. He sees the world through a very black and white filter. You’re either with him or you’re against him, and if you get in his way, he will cut you down.”
