Emma D’Arcy has delivered a thoughtful and profound reflection on what it means to portray Rhaenyra Targaryen across multiple seasons of House of the Dragon. During one of the pre-season press conferences, D’Arcy shared one of the biggest lessons they’ve learned from the role.

Quick read:

  • Emma D’Arcy very cleverly answers how a person can hold two truths at once while playing a character
  • Playing Rhaenyra has taught Emma that they can be violent and protective at once
  • They’ve taken the lesson that life doesn’t always play out the way everyone wants

When an interviewer asked,

“After having played Rhaenyra for so many years, has the character influenced you? What has Rhaenyra told Emma?”

Emma answered,

“I think the thing that playing Rhaenyra for so many years has taught me… is that you can hold two truths at once. You can be a mother and a queen. You can be loving and brutal. You can be right and wrong at the same time.”

The ever-changing cycle of life

D’Arcy went on to describe how the character has evolved under immense pressure:

“Rhaenyra has been forced to become someone she never expected to be. And I think that’s true for a lot of us — life changes us in ways we don’t always choose.
She’s had to harden, but there’s still this deep vulnerability and this need to be seen and understood. That tension is what makes her so interesting to play.”

This insight perfectly captures Rhaenyra’s internal conflict in the upcoming Season 3. As she steps fully into her power and the war escalates, she must balance her role as a mother with her duties as a queen and leader.

The contradictions within her: love versus ruthlessness, justice versus vengeance are becoming more pronounced.

Emma D’Arcy’s performance has been widely praised for its emotional depth and subtlety. Their ability to portray both Rhaenyra’s strength and her fragility has made her one of the most compelling characters in the Game of Thrones universe. As Season 3 continues, fans can expect to see this internal tension pushed even further, especially in Rhaenyra’s relationships with Daemon, Jace, and Alicent.
