In a powerful new interview with Extra TV, Abubakar Salim (Alyn of Hull) and Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) have opened up about the massive scale and emotional weight of the Battle of the Gullet, the centrepiece battle of House of the Dragon Season 3.

Quick read:

  • Salim and Toussaint revealed Battle of the Gullet will escalate quickly
  • Shooting for these war sequences feels terrifying in the moment
  • They revealed that the battle will be extremely violent

Both actors described the battle as sudden, devastating, and deeply chaotic.

Abubakar Salim explained:

“I think it’s a battle that comes, I feel, truly out of nowhere. It’s one of those battles that escalates so rapidly. Like we knew there was something simmering, right? We all knew something was simmering, but I think no one was ready for the absolute devastation and chaos that would become a product of this battle.”

He continued, emphasizing the shocking brutality:

“It’s a huge sort of set of like, oh wow, this is actually, this is so bad. And I think that it shows just how violent it is.”

The human cost of war

Steve Toussaint and Abubakar Salim both highlighted how much is lost in a single conflict. Salim noted the immense stakes, both narratively and for the cast and crew:

“There was a lot of stake behind the scenes with us as a production, as a cast as well to kind of show the emotion of it. But I also think within the actual storyline, just how much is lost and how much is taken from one battle, you know what I mean?”

The actors described the battle as terrifying in the moment, yet ultimately part of a larger pattern of senseless violence in Westeros. Salim reflected:

“These wars feel so nonsensical. They feel so pointless, but in the moment of it, it’s terrifying. It’s everything. And then it’s not. It’s just all wars.”

A forgotten but pivotal moment

One of the most interesting points raised was how the Battle of the Gullet fits into the larger history of Westeros. Abubakar Salim pointed out:

“It’s a battle that only a few people will know of if they are aware of the Game of Thrones universe to the nth degree, but truly it’s another thing that’s forgotten in time. And I feel like that’s the thing that’s really frightening about it.”

This comment shows one of House of the Dragon’s greatest strengths, showing pivotal historical events that were only briefly mentioned or entirely absent in the original Game of Thrones series.
