Confronting independence after loss
Antonia explained: “What was challenging was figuring out what her position would be if she wasn’t associated to certain characters. What does she stand for? So far, all we’ve seen of Baela is her doing what other people expect of her or trying to protect other people.” Jacaerys’ death removes one of her strongest ties, compelling Baela to act from her own interests rather than simply following others.

Growing into adulthood
She continued: “I think this season I was sort of forced to confront the fact that, as an individual, we haven’t seen her do anything for herself or born out of her own interests or desires… We’re seeing her sort of go into the same territory as we did when we first met her mom and thinking of her as an adult, what that means, and the kind of decisions she has to make going forward.” Season 3 positions Baela as a young woman stepping into maturity, echoing the path once taken by her mother, Laena Velaryon.

A new trajectory for Baela
Baela’s independence marks a shift in the narrative. No longer defined solely by her relationships, she begins to carve out her own place in the war. This evolution adds depth to her character and highlights the generational themes of legacy, identity, and survival that run through House of the Dragon.
