Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon Targaryen in House of the Dragon, recently admitted that the dragon riding scenes are not as glamorous as they look on-screen. Aemond Targaryen and his dragon, Vhagar, attacked Aegon during the battle at Rook’s Rest in Season 2. The vicious attack left Aegon incapable of riding a dragon again. In a new interview, Glynn-Carney reflected on his “chaotic” dragon riding scenes.

House of the Dragon features numerous dragons and dragon riders. Tom Glynn-Carney‘s Aegon is one of them, though he can no longer ride one. In an interview with PEOPLE, the 31-year-old actor discussed the behind-the-scenes of the dragon riding sequences. He said, “It’s very satisfying being up on the buck and having the wind machines blast you to bits.”

Glynn-Carney explained that he usually filmed on a stage with a “collection of screens that make a semicircle around you, and they give you perspective on where you are and what you’re flying past and what’s coming towards you.”

He continued, “The cameras are on these crazy cranes that move at the speed of light. They’re so fast and violent, but it’s great. You’re fully in it. There’s sound, and there’s wind, and there’s shouting on megaphones, and it’s all quite chaotic, but you’re in the eye of the storm, really.”

Elsewhere, he revealed that while filming the battle in Rooks’ Rest, he could see the fireballs approaching him on the screens around him.

Tom Glynn-Carney on Prince Aegon’s immediate concern

Tom Glynn-Carney believes that Aegon’s injuries from Aemond’s attack and his dragon, Sunfyre’s death, were a “catalytic moment in his [Aegon’s] trajectory.” He claimed that there is an “interesting dynamic” with Aegon’s feelings for Rhaenyra and his brother, Aemond.

While reclaiming the throne is his main objective, the actor said, “Aemond feels more like a pressing matter.” He explained, “He’s the more urgent issue at the moment because he’s the one actually making waves to try and find Aegon and do him some damage, and it’s whoever gets to the other person first, I guess.” Aegon is trying to escape King’s Landing with Larys Strong’s help. The duo have reached Rook’s Rest upon Aegon’s insistence, and Larys still remains unsure of how they will escape.
