Olivia Cooke or Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon, recently opened up about one of the most pivotal and tragic moments in the series; the deathbed scene where King Viserys confuses Alicent for Rhaenyra and shares the ancient Targaryen prophecy with her.
During her Mexico Comic Con appearance, Cooke described the devastating aftermath of that misunderstanding with raw honesty, saying that for Alicent, “everything went to sh*t” once she realized the magnitude of her mistake.

The misinterpreted prophecy
During the event, the host asked Olivia what’s the one moment that she would like to change from the series, and she picked Viserys’ deathbed scene. The scene features a heavily medicated and disoriented Viserys (Paddy Considine) mistakes Alicent for his daughter Rhaenyra. He speaks about Aegon the Conqueror’s dream, the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy, telling her:

“The Prince That Was Promised… It is you. You are the one. You must do this.”
Alicent, unaware of the full context of the prophecy (which was passed down secretly from heir to heir), interprets his words as Viserys naming their son Aegon II as the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. This single moment of miscommunication becomes the spark that ignites the full-scale Targaryen civil war, the Dance of the Dragons.
Olivia Cooke on Alicent’s reckoning
Cooke explained that Alicent experiences a painful reckoning in season 2 due to it.
“There’s a real reckoning… where she’s coming to terms with, ‘Oh my god, I have been so wrong, and I wrongly put my son on the throne because I misinterpreted my ailing husband.’ By the time Alicent gets to Rhaenyra, she knows that she’s made a massive, massive mistake.”
The actress highlighted Alicent’s internal struggle, the guilt, regret, and dawning horror as she realizes her actions have torn the realm apart and set her own family on a path of destruction.
A tragic catalyst
This moment is widely regarded as one of the most heartbreaking ones in the show. What Alicent believed was a dying king’s final wish for their son was actually a continuation of the sacred prophecy conversation Viserys had with Rhaenyra years earlier. Cooke’s nuanced performance captures Alicent’s shift from dutiful wife and protective mother to a woman burdened by catastrophic regret.
