One of the most memorable and tense moments in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 3 is the fake Daeron reveal, where both Rhaenyra and Alicent realise the boy presented as Alicent’s youngest son is an imposter.
Director Clare Kilner has revealed how she intentionally crafted the scene to heighten the shock and emotional impact.
Quick read:
- Director Claire Kilner deliberately used room-spinning effect to heighten the intensity of the fake Daeron reveal scene
- She called Emma’s double takes “priceless” because they added a more dramatic effect
- The expressions of both the actors gave her a lot of ideas on how to do the scene
Creating a sense of disorientation
Telling Entertainment Weekly, Kilner wanted the audience to feel the characters’ shock and confusion. She explained her approach to the intimate scene:
“When we shot that scene when Alicent and Rhaenyra both realize he’s not Daeron, it was a very small room and I just wanted to work with the steady-cam operator and feel the sense of the room spinning.”

This spinning effect helped convey the psychological disorientation and the sudden shift in power dynamics as the deception unraveled.

Emma D’Arcy’s “priceless” double takes
Kilner also highlighted the performances of Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra) and Olivia Cooke (Alicent), praising how their natural reactions elevated the scene:
“But also, when you get Liv and Emma in a room, you just watch them. It gives you a ton of ideas. The double takes that Emma did when they look at Alicent’s face and then back to Daeron and the moment where that penny drops, it’s just priceless.”

D’Arcy’s subtle double takes and the exchanged glances between the two actresses captured the dawning realization perfectly, turning a political twist into a deeply human moment of betrayal and shock.
Why this directing choice worked
By focusing on tight framing, camera movement, and authentic actor reactions, Kilner turned what could have been a straightforward exposition scene into one of Season 3’s standout dramatic beats. The combination of technical choices (steady-cam for unease) and powerful performances made the fake Daeron reveal feel unforgettable.
This moment not only advances the plot but also deepens Rhaenyra’s growing paranoia and the fractured relationship between the two former friends.
