A major vote of confidence
Condal first signed an overall deal with HBO in 2020, shortly after House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order. Out of several Game of Thrones prequels in development at the time, his project was the only one to move forward. He co-showran season 1 with Miguel Sapochnik and has served as the sole showrunner since season 2.
HBO’s decision to extend his deal through 2029 reflects the network’s strong belief in his leadership as the series enters its final chapter. Season 3 is set to premiere on June 21, 2026, with season 4 already confirmed as the last.

What the new deal includes
Under the renewed agreement, Condal will continue guiding House of the Dragon to its conclusion while also being free to create and produce new series for HBO. This long-term commitment gives the franchise stability and allows Condal time to explore fresh ideas both inside and outside the Game of Thrones universe.
HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has previously praised Condal, calling him a
“I’m thrilled with what Ryan has done, he’s been a great collaborator with us.”
Impressive achievements so far
House of the Dragon has been a major success for HBO as season 1 launched as the network’s biggest series debut ever with nearly 10 million viewers on its first night. The series has maintained massive viewership and earned strong reviews since. It received an Emmy nomination for ‘Outstanding Drama Series’ for season 1 and won a Golden Globe for ‘Best Drama Series.’
In addition to House of the Dragon, Condal serves as an executive producer on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the other active Game of Thrones spin-off. Prior to HBO, Condal co-created the sci-fi series Colony for USA Network and wrote major feature films including Hercules (starring Dwayne Johnson) and Rampage.
This new deal solidifies Ryan Condal’s role as one of the central creative forces behind the expanding Game of Thrones television universe. With season 3 just weeks away, fans can look forward to the final seasons being handled by the same visionary who helped turn the prequel into a global phenomenon.
