With Season 3 of House of the Dragon set to premiere on June 21, showrunner Ryan Condal has offered new insight into Rhaenyra Targaryen’s evolving mindset. Speaking at a press conference, Condal explained that the series deliberately frames Rhaenyra as a “chosen one” figure, comparable to Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, or Frodo Baggins.

Rhaenyra’s chosen one arc
Condal explained that Rhaenyra’s journey is not static, but constantly evolving. “Just because the character is [who they are] in this single moment in time, does not mean that is who that character is for all time. That would be boring to do,” he said. He noted that when a character is told they are chosen by the gods to rule and given immense power, “at some point they start believing their own press, don’t they? And they believe that they can do anything.”

How Season 3 differs from Thrones
Season 3 opens with the Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval clash Condal has compared to The Lord of the Rings. Unlike Game of Thrones, which often built slowly toward climactic battles, Condal said this season throws its “haymaker right away.” The decision reflects the urgency of the Dance of the Dragons, where war is immediate and Rhaenyra’s belief in her destiny collides with brutal reality.
