Casting the leads for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was never going to be easy. The success of HBO’s new Game of Thrones spin-off rested almost entirely on the chemistry between the towering hedge knight and his clever young squire or prince. During a recent HBO FYC panel, showrunner Ira Parker spoke candidly about this pressure.

- Ira Parker says Peter and Dexter are the perfect casting for Dunk and Egg
- He emphasized how important it was to find the right actors
- He slept relaxedly after casting these two actors

When asked about the relationship between Peter Claffey (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell (Aegon Targaryen or Egg), Parker was clear:
“Of course, it’s so important to nail this. You don’t have a show if you don’t have this.”

He explained that after months of writing scripts and assembling the creative team, the team realized the entire series depended on two actors: “a 7 foot tall giant and an 8 year old kid” who would carry 99% of the screen time.
The chemistry read that changed everything
The turning point came during the chemistry read. As soon as Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell stood together in the room and began performing scenes, their natural rapport was undeniable. Parker recalled the exact moment with visible relief:
“The moment the two of you stood in that room next to each other and were ripping through those scenes and just relating to each other, I just went, okay, we have a shot. We get to go shoot this thing now.”
He added with a laugh: “I never slept so f**king well.”
Why the Dunk and Egg connection matters?
That instant connection gave the production the confidence it needed.
The warm, loyal dynamic between the honorable but simple Dunk and the sharp-witted Egg is at the heart of George R.R. Martin’s beloved novellas. Their on-screen bond, both playful and touching has helped the show stand apart from the darker, more violent tone of Game of Thrones, offering a more intimate feel that fans have embraced.
